A tragic road accident occurred this Wednesday, May 6, on the road connecting Ndokayo to Ngaoundéré, in the Adamawa region of Cameroon. Preliminary reports indicate that at least seven people have died. The accident involved a bus from the Narral Voyages transport agency.
The exact circumstances of the accident remain unclear, but witnesses describe a scene of desolation. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene to assist the victims, including several seriously injured. An investigation has been opened to determine the causes of this tragedy.
Road safety in Cameroon remains a major challenge. According to official figures, the country records an average of 16,583 road accidents each year, causing the deaths of more than 1,000 people. The World Health Organization (WHO) even estimates this number to be around 6,000 deaths annually. In 2024, the Minister of Transport reported 1,781 accidents and 678 deaths. Efforts are being made to strengthen road safety policies, including modernizing prevention teams and introducing centralized intercity transport control systems based on artificial intelligence.
The main causes of accidents are often related to driver inattention, speeding and lack of vehicle control. The condition of the road network, with a lack of signage and maintenance problems, also contributes to the dangerousness of Cameroonian roads.
