Indomitable Lions coach David Pagou has accused Australia of cheating following his team's defeat in Sydney. According to Pagou, Australia violated FIFA regulations by making an excessive number of substitutions during their encounter. In the post-match press conference, Pagou claimed that Australia made eight substitutions, while he believed the regulations only allowed five.
"They make ten substitutions (the Socceroos actually made eight substitutions). We don't know that because the regulations say that there are only five substitutes," Pagou said. He added that this high number of changes allowed Australia to benefit from fresh players at the end of the match, which made him "very, very angry".
Pagou also explained that his staff had limited the number of substitutions to three, believing that the five-substitution rule was still in effect. He clarified that this decision was also motivated by the desire to give playing time to a maximum number of players in anticipation of the next match against China.
However, Football Australia confirmed that all teams participating in the FIFA Series 2026 had agreed with FIFA to allow up to 11 substitutions spread over three periods. This information does not appear to have reached David Pagou, who expressed his dissatisfaction with what he considered a violation of the rules.
The IFAB (International Football Association Board) had, however, adopted new rules in February authorizing up to eight substitutions during senior "A" international friendly matches, with the possibility of going up to 11 if both teams agree.
Beyond the controversy over the number of substitutions, Pagou acknowledged the quality of the Australian team, highlighting their cohesion and the fact that they have 25 good players. He noted in particular that the winning goal was scored by a newly introduced player.
Despite the defeat and the confusion surrounding the substitution rules, David Pagou remains focused on preparing his team for future deadlines, including the CAN 2027 qualifiers scheduled for September. The next match against China in Melbourne will be an opportunity for the Indomitable Lions to set the record straight and demonstrate their potential.
