David Eto’o, formerly of Union de Douala, has openly shared his disappointment regarding his participation in the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN). Despite what he considered adequate preparation, the experience left him feeling unfulfilled and marked a turning point in his career.

"The 2018 CHAN? I was very disappointed because I worked very hard to be there. I really wanted to prove to Cameroonians that I had the level," he confessed. Eto’o had rejoined Union de Douala and subjected himself to several months of intensive preparation for the competition.

He also spoke about his club career, emphasizing the importance of his performances for his selection. "I had difficulties getting into the team, but once I got into the team against Panthère, I never left. Subsequently, I became captain because I deserved to be captain," he explained, highlighting his determination to earn his place and assume a leadership role.

According to Eto’o, his performances caught the attention of the technical staff. "When the manager-selector came to watch Union – Coton Sport, I think I caught his eye, and that's why he called me up," he said. However, despite this recognition, the player remains marked by the lack of playing time he had during the tournament.

"I prepared a lot, and I think that during this CHAN, I should have played a lot more without disrespecting my teammates," he stated, expressing his regret at not having had the opportunity to fully demonstrate his abilities on the field.

Eto’o also mentioned a disagreement with the tactical choices of the coach at the time. "We had a very good team. The coach at that time wanted the midfielders to defend a little more. I liked to defend, but not like the others," he explained, highlighting a difference in vision that contributed to his frustration.

This disappointment had a significant impact on his career, as he announced his retirement from football shortly after the 2018 CHAN. "After that, I announced that I was quitting football and doing something else," he concluded.
