The absence of Maurice Kamto, a leading figure in the Cameroonian opposition and president of the MRC (Cameroon Renaissance Movement), at the funeral of Anicet Ekanè, leader of MANIDEM (African Movement for New Independence and Democracy), continues to spark strong reactions. The funeral, which took place in Bomono Gare, in the Moungo department, was marked by strong tributes but also by notable absences.
Messanga Nyamding, a professor and political analyst, expressed his views on the CLUB D’ÉLITES program on Vision4, stressing that Maurice Kamto had missed an important political and symbolic opportunity. According to him, Kamto's presence would have had considerable significance, going beyond simple personal tribute, given the current political context and the recent links between the leader of the MRC and the president of Manidem.
"By not going to Anicet Ekanè's funeral, Minister Maurice Kamto missed the opportunity to show that he is a true politician," said Messanga Nyamding. He added that attending the funeral would have been a significant gesture on a human and political level, an "immortal act".
However, this absence is interpreted differently. Within the MRC, some denounce a "manipulation" aimed at harming Maurice Kamto, pointing out that the party had been excluded from the organization of the funeral. Voices within the MRC had even urged Kamto to reconsider his decision to boycott. The party had justified its withdrawal by the exclusion of MANIDEM from the organization of the funeral, following a court decision.
Anicet Ekanè, who died on December 1, 2025, in detention, was a historical figure in the Cameroonian opposition. His arrest took place after he showed his support for a candidate opposed to Paul Biya in the presidential election. The circumstances of his death in prison had aroused strong emotions and many questions. Despite his death, Anicet Ekane continues to divide and disturb, a sign that his struggle still resonates.
Anicet Ekanè's funeral finally took place on Saturday, May 9, 2026, in Bomono Gare. The SDF (Social Democratic Front) was present, led by its national president, the Honorable Joshua Osih. The absence of Maurice Kamto, however, continues to fuel the debate.
