The inauguration of the new headquarters of the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot) was marked by a heated controversy regarding the commemorative plaque unveiled during the ceremony. The absence of the name of the Prime Minister, Joseph Dion Ngute, representative of the Head of State, sparked outrage from some observers, including André Luther Meka, a communicator from the RDPC.
Joseph Dion Ngute had presided over the event on behalf of the President of the Republic, Paul Biya. The omission of his name on the plaque was seen by some as a lack of respect towards the Cameroonian government, which subsidizes Fecafoot.
André Luther Meka expressed his disapproval, calling the omission a "serious mistake" and a "denial of the State". He stressed that this lack of consideration for the authority embodied by the Head of State was unacceptable to "Biyaists and Republicans". Meka called for the commemorative plaque to be corrected to include the name and title of the Prime Minister.
The controversy quickly spread on social media, where many Internet users criticized what they see as a lack of recognition from Samuel Eto'o, President of Fecafoot, towards the State.
The inauguration of the new Fecafoot headquarters, in the presence of CAF President Patrice Motsepe, should have been a moment of celebration for Cameroonian football. However, this incident cast a shadow over the event, reigniting tensions between the federation and some state representatives. Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute also took the opportunity to remind Samuel Eto'o of the need for "constructive dialogue".
