Cameroon marked Commonwealth Day 2026 with a ceremony to present the Peter Essoka Prize, an initiative to honor excellence in English-language broadcast journalism. The event took place on March 16, 2026, in Yaoundé, under the patronage of the Minister of External Relations, Mbella Mbella.
The ceremony brought together government members, heads of diplomatic missions from Commonwealth member countries accredited to Cameroon, Cameroonian dignitaries, and media professionals. This gathering underscored the importance of the role of journalists in disseminating information and promoting democratic values. The Peter Essoka Prize, recently established, aims to reward outstanding performance in the presentation and hosting of news programs on English-language radio and television.
Through this prize, Cameroonian authorities hope to encourage quality, professionalism, and rigor in the treatment of information. This distinction also pays tribute to Peter Essoka's commitment to the development and professionalization of the media in Cameroon. The jury, chaired by Joseph Chebonkeng Kalabubsu, highlighted the merit, talent, and competence of the winners.
Four journalists were recognized at this first edition: Druscilla Mokosso (best female newscaster), Benn Meno Pufong (best male newscaster), Patience Embelle Fominyen (best female animator), and Njeck Sylvanus (best male animator). Yvette Nkemji, also known as Ivy la Nationale, was named runner-up for best female animator and talk show host. Each winner received a reward of 500,000 CFA francs, thanks to the partnership between the Ministry of External Relations and Merdolf Sarl. The runners-up received a compensation of 100,000 CFA francs.
The Peter Essoka Prize, more than just a ceremony, aims to become an annual benchmark event, promoting excellence and encouraging rigorous, responsible, and passionate Cameroonian journalism. The initiative aims to structure and lend credibility to the profession of journalism, while honoring Peter Essoka's contribution to the Cameroonian media landscape.
