What should have been a simple administrative dispute has turned into an unexpected turn of events for the Miss Cameroon Committee (COMICA). On Monday, a complaint filed at the Odza police station against former Miss Cameroon, Josiane Golonga, for trespassing and defamation, was dismissed by Chief Commissioner Jean Nkoa.
Josiane Golonga, who was removed from her title the day before, went to her former official residence to collect her personal belongings, accompanied by a bailiff, feeling threatened in the place she had already left. It was then that she was arrested and taken to the Odza police station.
COMICA's strategy of portraying the former Miss as a disturbed person and accusing her of breaking into her own home failed. The institution probably hoped to strengthen its authority, but the prosecutor's office did not support this approach. The Chief Commissioner considered the argument of the destitution, pronounced the day before, legally inadmissible.
Commissioner Jean Nkoa reminded COMICA's lawyer that no judgment prohibited Josiane Golonga from accessing her former home. He also dismissed the defamation complaint, suggesting that COMICA take legal action if it felt aggrieved. According to him, the file was empty and he refused to participate in what he called influence peddling.
The case quickly escalated, drawing a crowd in front of the police station. Faced with popular pressure and the facts, the police ordered the release of Josiane Golonga. This incident highlights the limitations of using quick fixes in the management of institutional conflicts.
This rejection of the complaint is a setback for COMICA, whose credibility is undermined. This case raises questions about the use of law enforcement to settle internal disputes without a solid legal basis. The commissioner's intervention put an end to what looked like an abuse of power.
