Political analyst Claude Abe has strongly criticized governance in Cameroon, stating that corruption has never been as rampant as it is now, despite the establishment of numerous control structures.
As a guest on the Club d'Élites program on Vision 4 on April 26, 2026, Abe highlighted a significant gap between the adoption of laws and their effective enforcement, particularly in the fight against corruption. According to him, Cameroon gives the impression of complying with international standards by multiplying legislative and institutional mechanisms, without guaranteeing their effectiveness on the ground.
Abe noted that several institutions have been created over the years to improve governance, including CONAC (National Anti-Corruption Commission), ANIF (National Agency for Financial Investigation), the Special Criminal Court, and CONSUPE (Higher State Control). Despite this institutional arsenal, he believes that the results obtained remain below expectations. "In reality, corruption has never been as good as it is since the establishment of all these structures; just look at the curve," he said.
The researcher believes that the problem lies not so much in the absence of laws as in their implementation. He suggests that, with real political will, a simple implementing decree could have been enough to encourage actors to take concrete action, without the need for a succession of reforms and modifications.
Claude Abe, known for his socio-political analysis, was appointed national coordinator of the Cameroon Democratic Party (PDC) in February 2026, with the mission of reviving the party in anticipation of the municipal and legislative elections. His critical analysis of current governance highlights the persistent challenges Cameroon faces in the fight against corruption.
