Bayer Leverkusen, featuring young Cameroonian forward Christian Kofane, have qualified for the Champions League Round of 16. The qualification was secured this Tuesday at the BayArena, following the return leg of the play-off against Olympiacos. After a 2-0 victory in the first leg in Greece, Leverkusen secured their place with a 0-0 draw at home.
Christian Kofane started the match on the bench, a role as a substitute that coach Kasper Hjulmand seems to have reserved for him. Despite Kofane's absence on the field from the start, the match was intense, with a fierce battle in midfield. Olympiacos, seeking to reverse the situation after their home defeat, put pressure on the German defense.
Returning from the locker rooms, Leverkusen regained control of the match, creating several opportunities. However, the Greek team adjusted its strategy to avoid conceding goals. Despite a lively encounter, neither team managed to score, thus sealing Leverkusen's qualification for the Round of 16.
Although Leverkusen reached the round of 16, coach Kasper Hjulmand and the players expressed frustration with their performance. Captain Robert Andrich noted the lack of speed and aggressiveness in the team's play. Midfielder Jonas Hofmann joked that coach Hjulmand would probably go home to drown his frustration in a beer.
Kofane, 19, joined Bayer Leverkusen in July 2025 and quickly made his mark, scoring his first Champions League goal against PSV Eindhoven in October. A Cameroonian international, Kofane has already represented his country on several occasions. Leverkusen is now waiting to find out their opponent for the Round of 16, with the possibility of facing teams like Arsenal or Bayern Munich. Leverkusen had not passed this stage of the competition since participating in the Champions League final in 2002.
