Cavayé Yéguié Djibril, the former President of the National Assembly of Cameroon, passed away on Wednesday, May 6, at the age of 86.
A prominent figure in Cameroonian politics, Cavayé Yéguié Djibril led the National Assembly for 34 consecutive years, from 1992 to 2026. He had left office a few weeks prior, replaced by Théodore Datouo.
Hailing from the Far North region, born on February 1, 1940, Cavayé Yéguié Djibril was seen as a loyal ally of President Paul Biya and an influential figure in the regime. A Member of Parliament for Mayo-Sava for several decades, his career was marked by a rare longevity at the highest levels of the Cameroonian state.
His political career began as a physical education teacher before becoming the traditional chief of Mada. He was a member of the CPDM political bureau. Elected President of the National Assembly numerous times, Cavayé Yéguié Djibril held the position until 2026, when Théodore Datouo succeeded him.
In accordance with Muslim traditions, the former President of the National Assembly may be buried in the coming hours.
On March 17, 2026, Théodore Datouo was elected President of the National Assembly, ending Cavaye Yeguié Djibril's 34-year term.
His long tenure was marked by unwavering loyalty to President Paul Biya and the CPDM. His departure raises questions about the future of his political network and collaborators.
