Former Cameroonian football star Geremi Njitap showcased another side of his talents, revealing himself to be a passionate Scrabble player. On Saturday, March 14, 2026, he participated in the Scrabble Super Masters in Bona’Anja Siga Bonjo, in the Nkam department.
Njitap, a two-time African champion and former captain of the Olympic gold-winning team in Sydney in 2000, responded to the invitation of the Cameroonian Scrabble Federation (FECASCRAB). He was keen to encourage the federation's president, Amédée Assomo, and to congratulate the tournament organizers.
"There are foreigners taking part in this competition which is a Master's. For those who are used to organizing this kind of event, we all know what that means in terms of cost. This is an opportunity for me to address my congratulations and encouragement to the president of the Cameroonian Scrabble Federation," said Geremi Njitap. He also thanked the authorities, in particular the Ministry of Sports, for their support.
Njitap revealed that he himself had been playing Scrabble for around three years and was making rapid progress. "I'm still at the beginning. But I know myself. When I get into it… I like challenges," he said. He added that his former opponents were now avoiding him, a sign of his improvement.
During his visit, Amédée Assomo introduced Geremi Njitap to the young participants in the national school Scrabble championship as "a great Scrabble player". Njitap shared his experience and encouraged the youngsters to work hard to achieve their goals. He stressed the importance of passion and hard work, urging them to read and cultivate their minds.
The Cameroonian Scrabble Federation (FECASCRAB) was founded in 1990 and its mission is to promote Scrabble throughout Cameroon. It organizes competitions, training courses and encourages youth participation. Amédée Assomo is the current president of FECASCRAB. In addition to being a sports leader, Assomo is also a high-level Scrabble player, having been runner-up in the world individual classic championship in 2021.
After his speech, Geremi Njitap attended a game of Scrabble and the closing ceremony of the Super Masters.
