At the heart of FC Lorient, a Cameroonian connection shines through the performances of Darlin Yongwa and Arthur Avom. These two internationals, who share more than just a locker room, have developed a rare bond that transcends the field and positively influences their game.
Yongwa and Avom now share the same roof, a decision made by Yongwa to facilitate his compatriot's integration. "I offered Arthur to come live with me. I have enough space for two, it was useless for him to rent an apartment," he told Ouest-France. This cohabitation has strengthened their ties, allowing them to develop an instinctive understanding on the pitch. "We have the same language. Sometimes, I don't even need to speak, he already understands," Yongwa explains.
This proximity translates into increased efficiency on the field. Defender Darlin Yongwa recently distinguished himself by providing a decisive assist in a Ligue 1 match. In February 2025, their performances were recognized by fans, who included them in the team of the week for the 21st round of Ligue 2. Avom also scored his first professional goal during this period, confirming his rise.
Despite their club success, the two players experienced disappointment with the Cameroonian national team. In November 2025, they were eliminated in the semi-finals of the African World Cup 2026 qualifiers against the Democratic Republic of Congo. Avom started in that match, while Yongwa remained on the bench.
Beyond the challenges, Yongwa and Avom continue to progress together at FC Lorient. Yongwa, 25, is under contract until June 2026. Avom, a 21-year-old midfielder, brings his creativity to the team's game. Their complicity and talent are valuable assets for the Breton club.
Their understanding is such that they also know how to take a step back when necessary. "We spend so much time together that it becomes easy. We spend our whole lives together. So from time to time, everyone needs their space and we spend two days not acknowledging each other at home," says Yongwa. A balanced relationship that contributes to their success on the field.
