With municipal and legislative elections on the horizon in 2026, the steering committee for the United Nations Technical Assistance to Cameroon's 2025-2027 electoral cycle convened on Wednesday, March 4, to review project progress and set priorities for the coming year.
The meeting, co-chaired by Dr. Enow Abrams EGBE, President of ELECAM, and Dr. Issa SANOGO, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Cameroon, assessed significant progress made since the project's launch in May 2025. This progress includes promoting a peaceful electoral environment, strengthening institutional capacities, and fostering inclusion and citizen engagement, in line with the project's three main pillars.
Dr. Enow Abrams EGBE emphasized the importance of UN technical assistance in strengthening ELECAM's capabilities, improving procedures, modernizing electoral management tools, and promoting good practices in transparency, inclusion, and accountability. He stated that the project will enable ELECAM to better meet the challenges of organizing, managing, and supervising the 2025-2026 electoral cycle. Dr. Issa SANOGO commended the collaboration between ELECAM and the United Nations system, while also thanking financial partners such as the PBF and the Kingdom of Spain for their contributions.
For 2026, priorities will focus on inclusion, institutional capacity building, and multi-stakeholder dialogues, with the aim of consolidating a peaceful environment around the electoral process. These efforts are part of the broader UN contribution to promoting peaceful and inclusive elections in Cameroon.
ELECAM and the UN system signed an agreement on May 9 for this technical assistance project, with funding of approximately $5 million, covering presidential, regional, legislative, municipal, and senatorial elections.
