The Cameroonian national scrabble team has achieved a remarkable performance at the 10th edition of the African Francophone Scrabble Championships (CHAMPAS), taking place in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, since April 9, 2026.
After five days of competition, Cameroon has already won two medals: one silver and one bronze. King Josaphat Chewa, a leading figure in the Cameroonian team, distinguished himself by winning the bronze medal in the Duplicate Blitz event. Mactar Sylla from Senegal won gold in this category. Other Cameroonian players also performed well in this event, with Tsuata Lando, Lovet, Seundjeu and Tsoungui ranking 5th, 7th, 12th and 20th respectively.
In the Duplicate Pairs event, the duo of King Josaphat Chewa and Ivan Seundjeu won the silver medal. The Senegalese champions won gold, while the Ivorians took second place. This performance is all the more remarkable as this event requires great complicity, sharp strategy and flawless precision.
CHAMPAS 2026, which began on April 9, will conclude on April 19 and brings together 19 African nations. According to Gnabéré Daouda Sanou, president of the Burkinabe Scrabble Federation, this edition marks an important milestone, celebrating a decade of championships that have fostered excellence and fraternity between participating nations.
In Elite Classic, at the end of the day on April 15, Zingbe Gueu Mathieu, Konan Koffi Marjolain and Adjovi François-Xavier were in the lead with 56 points and 17 wins each, closely followed by Some Teodi Yves Roland with 54 points and 16 wins.
King Josaphat Chewa, born in Yaoundé on July 12, 1997, is a renowned Cameroonian scrabble player. He has won numerous prestigious titles, including the African Champion of Duplicate Scrabble in 2022. In addition to his sporting achievements, Chewa volunteers to introduce young people to scrabble, notably at Collège Libermann in Douala and Lycée de Monatélé.
Mactar Sylla from Senegal, who won the Blitz event, is also a world champion in French-language scrabble. He is ranked among the top 30 players in the world and has won several titles, including the World Blitz Championship in 2007 and the World Pairs Championship in 2007 and 2016.
The competitions continue in Ouagadougou, and the Cameroonian scrabble players hope to win more medals before the end of the championships.
