A pregnant shopkeeper tragically lost her life in Bassamba, in the Ndé department, West region of Cameroon, following an explosion in her shop. The tragedy occurred after a power outage, as the victim was trying to light a candle for illumination.
According to preliminary information, the shopkeeper had gone to her shop after a power cut. In the darkness, she lit a candle to illuminate the premises. Unfortunately, the flame accidentally knocked over a can of gasoline, causing an immediate explosion.
Trapped by the flames, the pregnant woman could not be rescued in time. She died at the scene, taking with her the child she was carrying. This double tragedy has plunged the local community into deep mourning.
Residents and relatives of the victim described a heartbreaking scene. They denounce the precarious living conditions of many traders, who are often forced to use dangerous lighting methods due to the instability of the electricity supply. Frequent power cuts in several towns and localities expose populations to increased risks, particularly in small businesses where flammable products are stored.
This incident highlights the dangers faced by small business owners in Cameroon due to failing electrical infrastructure. Enhanced safety measures and reliable access to electricity are needed to prevent such tragedies in the future.
