Cameroonian customs officials have carried out a significant operation in the fight against counterfeiting in Limbe, in the Southwest region. On February 24, 2026, the Karata Mobile Customs Brigade seized 5,160 counterfeit Guinness products.

The seizure included 2,472 bottles of Guinness (33 cl), 600 bottles of Origin (65 cl), 264 bottles of Malta Guinness (33 cl), and 1,824 cans of Malta Guinness. This operation is part of a broader campaign aimed at dismantling the production and distribution networks of fraudulent products.

According to customs officials, the sale of counterfeit products represents a significant obstacle to the national economy. Legitimate businesses, which comply with their tax obligations, are directly penalized by this unfair competition. Counterfeiting also affects employment, as nearly 6,000 people depend on the cultivation of raw materials used in the production of authentic brewing beverages. The sale of counterfeit products, therefore, threatens the income of these farmers and the jobs that result.

Counterfeiting is a recurring problem in Cameroon, affecting various sectors such as medicines, cosmetics, and food. A study by GICAM revealed that counterfeiting cost companies more than 40 billion FCFA between 2001 and 2006, also leading to a loss of tax revenue for the state and the elimination of thousands of jobs. The reasons that drive consumers to buy counterfeit products are often economic, with poverty encouraging them to opt for cheaper alternatives.

The sale of counterfeit products has serious consequences on the economy, public health, and Cameroon's reputation as a reliable trading partner. Regular seizures and awareness campaigns are therefore essential to combat this scourge and protect consumers.
