The Ministry of Transport in Cameroon has issued a formal notice to the mobility platform Yango, accusing it of promoting illegal road transport. This action, announced in a statement dated May 15, 2026, and made public on May 18, puts pressure on the company to comply with existing regulations.
The Minister of Transport, Jean Ernest Massena Ngalle Bibehe, has given Yango two months to comply with the regulatory requirements governing taxi transport via digital platforms. The ministry is demanding the immediate suspension of all vehicles operating without the required documents, such as a transport license, vehicle registration card, insurance, technical inspection certificate, driver's license, and certificate of competence.
In addition to this formal notice, a fine of 2.5 million FCFA has been imposed on the platform, payable to the Cameroonian public treasury. Several drivers considered to be illegal transporters have also been sanctioned, with their vehicles suspended for three months. The vehicles in question, registered CE 913 NR, CE 439 PM, CE 202 BF, CE 142 NL, CE 759 OV, and CE 788 OM, have been immediately impounded, and each offender will have to pay a fine of 500,000 FCFA.
This action by the Ministry of Transport aims to emphasize the importance of complying with existing regulations in the road transport sector in Cameroon, both for digital players and traditional transporters. Digital platforms operating in urban transport are urged to regularize their situation quickly to avoid possible additional sanctions in the coming months.
Yango was previously suspended in Cameroon in February 2023 for similar reasons, before being authorized to resume operations in August of the same year. At that time, the platform expressed its commitment to complying with regulations and collaborating with the Cameroonian authorities. It remains to be seen how Yango will react to this new formal notice and what measures it will take to comply with the requirements of the Ministry of Transport.
