The Ministry of Forests and Wildlife (MINFOF) in Cameroon has ordered the immediate suspension of activities of the Association Forêts et Développement Rural (FODER) in the forestry and wildlife sector. This decision, communicated through an official letter dated March 3, 2026, and signed in Yaoundé, follows the expiration of a memorandum of understanding between MINFOF and FODER.
According to the letter, which 237online.com obtained a copy of, MINFOF is asking FODER to cease all activities in the forestry and wildlife sub-sector until the renewal process of the memorandum of understanding is finalized. The Minister justifies this measure by the need to avoid any embarrassing situation for the forest administration, stressing that FODER teams continued their operations despite the expiration of the agreement.
The ministerial decision, referenced under number N°094/MINFOF/SETAT/SG/DCP/CCOOP/CEA1/SE, has been officially notified to the relevant departments of the ministry. It comes in a context where Cameroon is gradually strengthening its control over the management of forest resources, a sector that is crucial for the national economy and the preservation of biodiversity.
FODER is a Cameroonian non-governmental organization created in 2002, specializing in forest governance and monitoring of activities related to the exploitation of natural resources. The NGO is known for its advocacy for transparency and participation of local communities in forest management. It is also ISO 9001:2015 certified for its external independent monitoring activities.
This suspension of activity raises questions in environmental circles, given the important role played by FODER in the sector. For now, the association has not yet released an official reaction. This case could redefine the relationship between civil society organizations and forestry authorities in Cameroon.
