Cameroon has officially launched its National Digital Health Strategic Plan (PSNSN) for the period 2026-2030, marking a significant step in modernizing the country's health sector. The launch took place on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at the Hilton Hotel in Yaoundé, under the chairmanship of the Inspector General of Administrative Services of the Ministry of Public Health, BOUKAR.
This five-year plan, with a budget of 29,007,000,000 CFA francs, will serve as a roadmap for digital health initiatives in Cameroon. It is structured around eight priority areas, including governance, legislation, human resources, infrastructure, interoperability, and innovation. The main objective is to improve access to healthcare, reduce patient care delays, strengthen traceability and transparency, and improve the management of health emergencies.
The Ministry of Public Health considers this plan as a strategic investment for the future of Cameroon, responding to the challenges identified during the implementation of the 2025 strategic plan. The latter revealed a level of maturity of the digital health system estimated at 1.8 out of 5. The new plan aims to correct structural weaknesses, such as poor coordination between stakeholders, a lack of harmonization of data collection tools, and limited interoperability between digital platforms.
The implementation of the PSNSN will rely on multi-sectoral governance, involving various actors such as the Ministry of Public Health, administrations involved in digital development, technical and financial partners, the private sector, civil society, and academic institutions. The focus will be on creating a coherent and integrated ecosystem, aligned with international standards.
Cameroon, like other African nations, recognizes the potential of digital health to overcome challenges related to access to care, the shortage of qualified health professionals, and infrastructure gaps. The use of digital technologies, such as mobile health (mHealth), telemedicine, and artificial intelligence, offers unique opportunities to improve the reach and efficiency of health services. The implementation of this strategic plan represents an important step towards achieving a more efficient and accessible healthcare system for all Cameroonians.
