Cameroon's pork production sector is receiving a significant financial boost. President Paul Biya has approved, through a decree signed on May 4, 2026, a financing agreement of FCFA 5.6 billion. This loan, contracted with Deutsche Bank Spain, is earmarked for the construction, equipment, and commissioning of three industrial pig farms.

These farms will be strategically located in three different regions: Kounden (West), Bali (Northwest), and Kaélé (Far North). This geographical choice reflects a desire to decentralize production and strengthen food security across the country.

This project is part of a broader ambition to modernize the Cameroonian pork industry, notably through the Consular Project for the Development of Pig Farming (Proporc). The goal is to transition from a mostly artisanal production to a third-generation industrial production, capable of meeting national demand and, eventually, conquering export markets.

The initiative also plans to introduce improved pig breeds to renew the national herd and increase the sector's performance. The Chamber of Agriculture, Fisheries, Livestock and Forests (Capef) will oversee the implementation, with technical support from specialized companies. Each farm is expected to produce 10,000 pigs per year, totaling 30,000 heads for the three sites.

Ultimately, this funding aims to build 500 modern farms to meet growing demand, particularly in major cities. A study by Trends & Poor estimated the Cameroonian pork market at over FCFA 230 billion in 2024, for a volume of 77,000 tons, compared to 43,890 tons in 2023 according to the Ministry of Livestock. The firm anticipates an annual growth of about 9%, which could bring the market to nearly FCFA 490 billion by 2030. In 2021, production in Cameroon was 44,105 tons, against an estimated demand of 75,000 tons.

The Consular Project for the Development of Pig Farming in Cameroon (Proporc), created in June 2022 by the Chamber of Agriculture, Fisheries, Livestock and Forests of Cameroon (Capef), aims to build approximately 20 farms for the pork sector. The German company Big Dutchman International GmbH, specializing in feeding systems and equipment for modern livestock farming, supports this project.

The Cameroonian pork sector, despite its potential, faces challenges such as the lack of modern slaughtering and processing facilities.
