A septuagenarian disabled retiree in Bamendjou, in the West region of Cameroon, was allegedly violently assaulted on his own land. The incident, which resulted in his prosthesis being broken, highlights the vulnerability of elderly individuals in land disputes.
According to reports, the man had decided to spend a peaceful retirement in his home village, where he had started building his house. However, he discovered this Tuesday that his property was blocked by a banner and that work was being carried out on his land by unknown individuals. Upon investigating, he learned that these individuals were acting on behalf of the Mayor of Bamendjou, Takam Xavier, who allegedly claimed ownership of the plot.
When the retiree opposed this occupation, he was reportedly brutally attacked, his prosthesis damaged, and threatened. His family denounces a targeted attack against a defenseless person, motivated by his vulnerability. "They saw an easy target: an elderly, disabled man, whose children are not all present to defend him," his family stated.
Images of the assault have been transmitted to the media, sparking outrage and calls for justice. The retiree's family is demanding a thorough investigation, protection for their loved one, and that the truth be revealed in this case. The case highlights the persistent land issues in Cameroon and the need to protect the rights of the most vulnerable citizens. Xavier Takam is the mayor of the commune of Bamendjou. He was elected on June 25, 2021.
