In late 2025, an escalation of violence in border areas led tens of thousands of people to seek refuge in Cameroon, fleeing attacks by armed groups, including the Islamic State in West Africa (ISWA) and its affiliates. This situation has created enormous pressure on Cameroon's resources, despite the government's stated support for refugees. Clashes in February and March 2026 on the border with Nigeria are directly linked to the activity of these groups, highlighting the interconnectedness of regional and internal security issues. The Lake Chad Basin has become a center of radical influence, exacerbating instability.
Cameroonian authorities fear that about a hundred radicalized individuals have infiltrated the country under the guise of the influx of refugees. Arrests linked to extremist networks have taken place in Yaoundé and Douala, signaling a geographic expansion of the threat. Although law enforcement is aware of the problem, its growing scale is straining state capacity.
The ongoing Anglophone crisis in Cameroon poses an additional challenge. The already fragile political balance could be broken by the involvement of radical elements, which could quickly destabilize the region. Political reforms are underway, but uncertainty remains as to their impact on the overall situation.
