The body of Anicet Ekane, a historical figure of the Cameroonian opposition who died on December 1, 2025, will soon be transferred to Douala, his hometown, to receive a final tribute.
According to a note from the African Movement for New Independence and Democracy (Manidem), dated March 1, 2026, the body of the former party president will leave the morgue of the Yaoundé Central Hospital on Tuesday, March 3, 2026. It will then be flown from Yaoundé Nsimalen International Airport to Douala, where Anicet Ekane was based. Manidem invites all "Kamerunian patriots" to participate in this transfer, the detailed program of which remains to be specified.
Anicet Georges Ekane died at the State Defense Secretariat (SED). His body had been sealed on the orders of the government commissioner at the Yaoundé military court, before being returned to his family last week, following the lifting of judicial restrictions. This lifting of seals comes after pressure from the family, represented by its lawyers, political leaders, and following the conclusion of investigations opened by the authorities to determine the causes of his death. The autopsy concluded natural causes.
The transfer of the body to Douala marks the start of tribute ceremonies to the man who marked the political history of Cameroon over the past 35 years. A leading figure in the opposition, Anicet Ekane participated in many struggles for a democratic transition at the head of the State. His political comrade, Djeukam Tchameni, currently imprisoned, paid tribute to him through a book entitled "Anicet Ekane my fellow fighter", prefaced by Henriette Ekwe and postfaced by Me Alice Nkom.
Born on April 17, 1951 in Douala, Anicet Ekane marked the Cameroonian political scene with his commitment to democracy and independence. He founded Manidem in 1995, a party claiming the legacy of the Union of the Peoples of Cameroon (UPC). His death in detention, after his arrest during the post-election protests of October 2025, sparked strong reactions. His funeral in Douala should be a moment of great emotion and reflection for his many supporters.
Anicet Ekane's remains will leave Yaoundé on March 3, 2026 for Douala.
