A tragic event unfolded this morning in the Adamawa region of Cameroon. Around 4:30 AM, three teachers from the Gadjiwan Bilingual School were kidnapped by highway robbers. They were en route to a UNAPED seminar in Kontcha when the incident occurred. The victims include the school's headmistress and two of her colleagues.
The kidnappers quickly made their demands known: a ransom of 45 million FCFA. This colossal sum, divided into 15 million per teacher, raises questions about the families' ability to gather such an amount. The news has plunged families, colleagues, and students into deep anguish.
The school's headmistress, in a moment of despair, managed to contact the Inspector of Mayo-Baléo around 9:30 AM. Using an unknown Orange number, presumably belonging to the kidnappers, she tearfully described the situation and confirmed the amount of the ransom demanded. "She was in tears," witnesses reported, highlighting the state of shock and fear in which the victims find themselves.
Following this heartbreaking call, the Inspector immediately alerted the Divisional Delegate, who in turn informed the Commander of the Gendarmerie Brigade. Search operations have been launched in the area in the hope of locating and rescuing the teachers. The educational community and the victims' families are plunged into deep concern, praying for their quick and safe release.
The three teachers are described as dedicated educators, fully committed to their mission. Their abduction, which occurred while they were traveling to a professional event, highlights the risks faced by teachers, even in the performance of their duties.
Unfortunately, this incident is not an isolated case. Kidnappings of teachers have already occurred in the English-speaking regions of Cameroon. In 2018, armed separatists kidnapped at least 79 students and three staff members from a Presbyterian school. These acts of violence underscore the need for increased security for educators and students throughout the country.
