A land dispute has claimed the life of a 73-year-old woman in Mbankomo, a town located approximately 30 kilometers from Yaoundé, in the Centre region. The victim was shot amidst a quarrel between two families disputing the ownership of a piece of land.
Tensions between the families were known in the neighborhood, but no one anticipated such an escalation of violence. The victim, described as a defenseless old woman, tragically paid with her life for a dispute that should have been resolved by the competent authorities.
Land conflicts remain a major cause of community violence in Cameroon. In 2023, the National Commission for Human Rights and Freedoms (CNDHL) reported a worrying increase in these disputes, particularly in the peri-urban areas around Yaoundé.
