Camcartour Travel Launches in Cameroon: Intercity Transport Sector Remains Skeptical
Cameroon News

Camcartour Travel, the new intercity transport company launched by Carlos Ngoualem, is already raising questions about its viability in a sector known to be challenging in Cameroon. The company began operations on February 19, 2026, connecting Douala to the West of the country, an area where competition is particularly fierce. Despite a fleet of new buses and ambitious communication, industry professionals express doubts about Camcartour Travel's ability to establish itself in the long term.

The launch of Camcartour Travel comes in a saturated market, dominated by companies well established for over 20 years. These companies, such as Finexs, Garanti Express and Général Express, benefit from solid networks, loyal customers and good cost control. In this context, the arrival of a new player, even with modern buses, does not guarantee success. Carlos Ngoualem, Deputy Mayor of Douala 5th, is counting on a premium image and a modern fleet to differentiate himself. The company currently serves two main routes: Douala – Mbouda, with stops in Dschang and Bangan, and Douala – Bafoussam, with two intermediate stops.

The profitability of intercity transport in Cameroon is fragile. High maintenance costs, road conditions, personnel management and price wars pose major challenges. Several companies, despite promising beginnings, have disappeared in less than five years. A terminal manager in Douala points out that many start with enthusiasm, but few survive in the long term.

To ensure its financial sustainability, Camcartour Travel will have to maintain a profitable operation of its buses. Deteriorated roads accelerate vehicle wear and increase maintenance costs, especially on the Douala–Bafoussam route, which is nearly 300 kilometers long. Competition also imposes low prices, limiting profit margins. Customer loyalty will be another determining factor. Camcartour Travel will have to ensure regular departures, avoid breakdowns and maintain quality service to gain passenger confidence.

Camcartour Travel aims to meet a need to improve the quality of public transport in Cameroon. The company plans to gradually expand its network to Yaoundé, the South and the northern part of the country. For now, the company serves the West region from Douala, with "VIP" passengers to Bafoussam or Mbouda. Departures take place every day from Bonamoussadi in Douala. Time will tell whether Camcartour Travel will overcome the obstacles and establish itself permanently in the Cameroonian intercity transport landscape.
