Amidst the Bébé Mathis trial that shook Cameroon in May 2025, the defense team for Dagobert Nwafo, accused of the young boy's murder, argued for his acquittal this Thursday, March 12, 2026. The lawyers highlighted what they consider significant flaws in the investigation and the absence of irrefutable scientific evidence linking their client to the crime.
Before the court, the defense pointed out shortcomings in the case's investigation. They specifically contested the validity of blood tests presented as evidence, arguing that no expertise could definitively confirm that the traces belonged to Dagobert Nwafo.
Another point raised by the lawyers concerned a certain Messina, presented as the one who allegedly recovered the dagger used during the crime. The defense questions why this individual was never interrogated by the court, raising concerns about the thoroughness of the investigation and suggesting that Messina may hold crucial information.
The defense lawyers insisted that this lead was not sufficiently explored, leaving doubt about Messina's potential role in the events. They thus pleaded for a "complete and unconditional acquittal" of Dagobert Nwafo, considering that his guilt is not formally established.
Dagobert Nwafo is considered the primary suspect in the murder of Bébé Mathis, which occurred in the Ngoa-Ekelle neighborhood of Yaoundé. According to available information, Nwafo, who is the father of artist Lydol, allegedly killed the child following a dispute with the latter's father in a bar. The case has been in the hands of the Cameroonian justice system since May 2025, in order to determine the facts and bring the culprit to justice. On December 11, 2025, the prosecution requested the death penalty against Dagobert Nwafo.
