According to Oscar Njiki, Bamileke cultural associations are often misunderstood, perceived as places of exclusion when, in his view, they are essential spaces for preserving and developing identity. The Cameroonian analyst insists on the role of these structures as "laboratories" where the future of villages, mutual aid and development projects are discussed, far from criticisms of insularity.
Njiki refutes the idea that these associations are an urban invention, highlighting their presence in the villages of western Cameroon, creating a network of reciprocity between localities. He cites the example of Bangangté, which has cultural associations in several cities, and vice versa. This organization demonstrates, according to him, a Bamileke identity that is strengthened through mobility, instead of being lost in it.
The analyst opposes the idea of integration synonymous with assimilation, acculturation or depersonalization. For him, successful openness requires a strong identity anchor, allowing for an enriching dialogue with other cultures. Bamileke cultural associations, according to Njiki, are places where people meet "so as not to dissolve into everyday life in contact with others".
Njiki criticizes those who see these associations as a form of exclusion, inviting them to question their own obsession with others. He emphasizes that integration should not be an absorption, but a "fruitful coexistence of differences".
The existence of these cultural associations demonstrates a desire to maintain a strong link with one's origins, while opening up to the outside world. They allow to cultivate memory and dignity, while participating in the development of communities. These spaces for exchange and solidarity are essential for successful integration, based on respect and valuing the identities of each individual.
