Cameroonian striker Vincent Aboubakar scored twice for Neftchi Baku in their away match against Shamakhi, in the 22nd round of the Azerbaijan Premier League. Despite Aboubakar's goals, Neftchi failed to secure a victory, drawing the match 2-2.
The match started with high intensity from both sides, but neither team managed to gain an advantage in the first half. Returning from the locker rooms, Neftchi's coach, Yuriy Vernydub, decided to bring in Aboubakar in the 46th minute, replacing Sambou. This change proved fruitful, as Aboubakar quickly made his presence felt on the field.
At the hour mark, Aboubakar opened the scoring, giving Neftchi the lead. However, Shamakhi responded and came back to level the score through Cézar Henrique, equalizing at 1-1. As the match seemed to be heading towards a draw, Aboubakar struck again in added time, scoring his second goal in the 90+2nd minute and giving his team the lead once more.
Unfortunately for Aboubakar and Neftchi, Shamakhi was awarded a penalty in the final seconds of the match. Karim Rossi converted the penalty, securing a 2-2 draw.
Vincent Aboubakar, who wears number 45, joined Neftchi in October 2025 and signed a one-year contract with an option for an additional year. Before joining the Azerbaijani club, he played for Hatayspor and has also played in the leagues of France, Portugal, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia. Aboubakar has won championships in Portugal with Porto and in Turkey with Besiktas. A Cameroonian international, he has played in over 110 matches for the Indomitable Lions, where he is the captain.
This double brings his total to four goals for Neftchi in the Azerbaijan championship. Despite the draw, Aboubakar's performance underscores his importance to Neftchi, who are looking to improve their position in the Premyer Liqa.
Neftchi is currently seventh in the Azerbaijan Premier League.
