The Archdiocese of Yaounde is preparing to commemorate a significant milestone in its history. On June 6, 2026, the faithful of the archdiocese are called to mark the 70th anniversary of its creation, an event placed under the sign of gratitude and spiritual renewal.
In a pastoral note dated March 26, 2026, the Archbishop of Yaounde invites the Catholic community to recognize the graces received over the past seven decades. He draws on the words of the psalm "He has not done so for any nation" to evoke the amazement of the first missionaries at the divine work accomplished in this diocese. This collective memory is a constant call to the recognition and mission to proclaim and share the goodness of God.
Beyond mere commemoration, this celebration is intended as a time to consolidate faith, strengthen ecclesial communion, and deepen Christian commitment. The event will coincide with the 45th anniversary of the Archbishop's priestly ministry and the inauguration of the new Diocesan Center of Works in Mvolyé.
The faithful are encouraged to participate in this event in a spirit of prayer, fraternal joy and inner availability. This celebration offers the entire community the opportunity to renew itself and reaffirm its vocation as a faithful witness in the service of the Gospel. The Cathedral of Notre Dame des Victoires in Yaounde is the seat of the Metropolitan Archbishop. There is also a Minor Basilica at Mary Queen of the Apostles Basilica in Yaounde.
The Archdiocese of Yaounde was established on March 18, 1890 as the Apostolic Prefecture of Cameroon. It was later promoted to Apostolic Vicariate of Cameroon on January 2, 1905, then to Apostolic Vicariate of Yaounde on April 3, 1931. On September 14, 1955, it became the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Yaounde. This event will be an opportunity to remember the journey and look to the future with hope and determination. The jubilee celebration will be a time of celebration, prayer and spiritual renewal for all the faithful of the archdiocese.
