The African Movement for New Independence and Democracy (MANIDEM) has hardened its tone in the face of tensions surrounding the funeral of Georges Anicet Ekane, a historical figure of the Cameroonian opposition who died in detention. After taking a stand against Issa Tchiroma Bakary, the party is now targeting Djeukam Tchameni, accusing him of political opportunism.
In a statement signed by its vice-president, Valentin Dongmo Fils, MANIDEM criticizes Djeukam Tchameni for announcing the sending of a representative to the funeral ceremonies organized by a section of the deceased's family. The party sees this as an attempt to take advantage of the fragility following the disappearance of its historical leader.
The document also criticizes Djeukam Tchameni's legitimacy to speak on behalf of political platforms close to MANIDEM. "He has neither the right nor the capacity," the statement asserts, denouncing a desire to appropriate a political line that does not belong to him and to distance himself from the orientations carried by Anicet Ekane.
This stance comes after similar accusations against Issa Tchiroma Bakary, described as a "traitor" following the publication of the funeral program. MANIDEM seems to refuse any interference in the organization of its president's funeral, exacerbating divisions within the opposition.
The funeral of Anicet Ekane is at the center of a battle between his biological family and his political comrades, with accusations of interference from the regime in place. A court decision even suspended the ceremonies initially planned, illustrating the fractures within the Cameroonian opposition. Ekane, an emblematic figure of the opposition, died on December 1, 2025, after being arrested in October in the context of post-election unrest. His death and the conditions of his detention had sparked outrage.
