Manchester United and England defender Harry Maguire was convicted by a Greek court on Wednesday in connection with an incident dating back to 2020. Accused of minor assault, resisting arrest, and attempted bribery following a brawl on the island of Mykonos, Maguire received a 15-month suspended prison sentence.
Initially sentenced to 21 months suspended, Maguire appealed, leading to the annulment of the initial verdict and the granting of a retrial. The retrial, which had been postponed several times, finally took place in his absence, as Maguire was fulfilling his sporting duties with Manchester United.
Despite the conviction, Harry Maguire maintains his innocence and intends to appeal to the Greek Supreme Court. His lawyers have reportedly rejected several settlement offers, demonstrating his determination to clear his name. According to his previous statements to the BBC, he feared for his life during his arrest in 2020, even suspecting a kidnapping attempt.
This legal case, which has been dragging on for several years, is therefore not yet closed. Pending the outcome of his appeal, Maguire remains available to play for Manchester United, including the match against Newcastle.
