André Onana, the Manchester United goalkeeper, has not ruled out a return to the Cameroon national team. During a recent live session on TikTok, he addressed the issue with a certain detachment, while remaining open to a possible call-up.
"The national team is for all Cameroonians and I am not retired," he declared, emphasizing that he still considers himself available for selection. However, he added realistically, "But if I am not called up, it simply means that I am not good enough". This statement suggests an acceptance of his current situation, while keeping the door open for a future recall.
Onana also took the opportunity to acknowledge the quality of the competition at his position. "For the moment, we have Epassy who is good. We have Simon Ngapandouetnbu and other new players," he said, praising the performances of his teammates. He clarified that the decision to call him up or not was up to the technical staff: "The day the coach considers that I am good enough, they will call me and we will see".
This statement contrasts with the tensions that may have been mentioned in the past regarding his situation in the national team. Before projecting himself on a possible return, Onana had mentioned problems with bonus management and internal tensions within the team.
As a reminder, André Onana was excluded from the Cameroon team during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar for disciplinary reasons. He then announced his international retirement before reversing his decision.
The situation of the goalkeeper position within the Indomitable Lions therefore remains to be closely monitored, with increased competition and an André Onana who is positioning himself as a potential asset for the future.
