The road to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations is entering a crucial phase for the Indomitable Lions. The qualifying draw will be held this Tuesday, May 19, 2026, in Cairo, Egypt, marking the official kick-off of the qualifying campaign.

The 48 participating nations, including Cameroon, will learn their opponents during this ceremony, which will take place at the headquarters of the Egyptian Football Association. Cameroon aims to regain its place at the top of African football after a disappointing AFCON 2023. The 2027 competition, co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, will take place from June 19 to July 17, 2027.

The qualifying format includes 12 groups of four teams each. The top two teams from each group will secure their ticket to the final phase. However, there is a particularity in the groups including Kenya, Tanzania, or Uganda, already qualified as host countries: only one other team from these groups will be able to qualify. This promises fierce duels for qualification in these groups.

The qualifying schedule is condensed, with the six matchdays spread over three FIFA international windows between September 2026 and March 2027. The first two matchdays will be played from September 21 to October 6, 2026. The third and fourth matchdays will take place from November 9 to 17, 2026, and the fifth and sixth matchdays will be held from March 22 to 30, 2027.

Cameroon, being among the usual favorites with nations like Senegal, Morocco, Egypt, Algeria, Nigeria, Côte d'Ivoire, and South Africa, will have to be wary of possible surprises. Teams like Central African Republic, Chad, Eritrea, Somalia, and South Sudan hope to qualify for the first time.

This draw will allow David Pagou, coach of Cameroon's A team, to know the obstacles that will stand in the way of qualification. The pressure will be high on the Indomitable Lions for this campaign.

The 2027 AFCON will mark the return of the competition to East Africa for the first time since 1976, when Ethiopia hosted the tournament. The stakes are therefore high for the host countries and for all African nations aspiring to participate.

This Tuesday's draw will kick off an intense and exciting qualifying campaign. Cameroonian fans are eagerly awaiting to know the opponents of the Indomitable Lions in their quest for the 2027 AFCON.
