Cameroon's elimination in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations against Morocco continues to fuel regrets, particularly due to a contentious incident involving Bryan Mbeumo. The Manchester United forward, like many Indomitable Lions supporters, is still struggling to come to terms with the 2-0 defeat against the Atlas Lions, which was marked by controversial circumstances.
In the 68th minute, with Cameroon trailing 1-0, Mbeumo went down in the penalty area after a challenge from a Moroccan defender. Mauritanian referee Dahane Beida remained unmoved, failing to signal a foul or call for VAR intervention. This decision sparked incomprehension and anger among Cameroonians, who felt that a penalty could have revitalized their team in this crucial match.
"The quarter-final against Morocco? I've never felt so much pressure before a match since I started playing football… There were some minor incidents on both sides, but I think there was a penalty on me," Mbeumo said, visibly frustrated, in an interview. He added, "The referee didn't even bother to check the VAR".
This contentious incident was not the only controversy surrounding the match. The appointment of the referee had already been a subject of discussion, with the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) contesting the initial choice of Egyptian referee Amin Omar. CAF eventually appointed Mauritanian referee Dahane Beida, a decision that angered FECAFOOT.
Beyond the uncalled penalty, Mbeumo acknowledged that Cameroon had a poor start to the match. "We were a bit reluctant to play in the first half, that's one of the only regrets we can have," he conceded. Despite the disappointment, the Cameroonian forward expressed optimism for the future of the national team. "Very few people expected us to go this far. I think we have a bright future," he concluded.
The incident fueled a debate about impartiality and refereeing standards at AFCON 2025.
