Twelve people were kidnapped on the road connecting Meïganga to Yamba, in the Adamawa region, further confirming the region's status as a hotspot for kidnappings in Cameroon. The incident occurred in broad daylight when road bandits emerged from the dense vegetation, blocking traffic and capturing motorists and motorcycle passengers, including students, a teacher, and farmers.
"They took everything—the people, the motorcycles, everything," testified a local resident still in shock. The victims are defenseless civilians, trapped on a road axis that is supposed to be secure. Among those abducted are at least three school-aged minors, a teacher on their way to work, a local elected official, and farmers returning from the fields.
The kidnappers not only took the people but also their motorcycles and personal belongings. So far, no official claim has been made by the perpetrators of this act.
The Adamawa region faces increasing insecurity, marked by kidnappings for ransom and acts of banditry. In January 2025, an operation by the Cameroonian defense forces led to the release of seven hostages and the neutralization of several kidnappers in the region, demonstrating the government's determination to restore peace. The Minister of Defense had also announced a reorganization of the military strategy to counter the growing insecurity in this mountainous area.
However, despite these efforts, kidnappings persist, fueled in part by the crisis in the neighboring Central African Republic, which promotes the proliferation of weapons and armed groups in the region. In 2018, 150 people were kidnapped in Adamawa, with significant socio-economic consequences for the local population.
Faced with this situation, authorities are calling on the population to be more vigilant and to work closely with security forces. The fight against insecurity in Adamawa remains a major challenge, requiring a comprehensive approach combining military actions, regional cooperation, and socio-economic development.
The persistence of such criminal acts raises serious questions about the safety of the population and the effectiveness of the measures put in place to address it. Fear and uncertainty continue to reign among the inhabitants of Adamawa.
