Éric Van Michel Ntiba, a Member of Parliament for Lomié, was involved in a road accident on the Yaoundé–Abong Mbang road on the night of April 14 to 15, 2026. The accident occurred precisely at the village of Djoum, after Ngoemetak.
According to initial reports, the MP was traveling to his home village in a Toyota Hilux pickup when a violent collision occurred with another vehicle. The impact severely damaged the MP's vehicle, reducing part of it to scrap metal.
Miraculously, no casualties were reported despite the scale of the accident. The occupants of the vehicle, including MP Ntiba, were quickly transported to the Abong Mbang District Hospital for treatment and check-ups. Their state of health is not a major concern, although the shock was significant.
The driver of the second vehicle involved in the accident fled the scene immediately after the collision, taking advantage of the darkness and confusion. The Abong Mbang gendarmerie platoon went to the scene to carry out the usual investigations. An investigation has been opened to identify and apprehend the fleeing driver.
Road accidents remain a major cause of death in Cameroon. Each year, road accidents leave at least 4,000 Cameroonians disfigured, costing the economy around 800 billion FCFA. In response, the Cameroonian government has announced stricter prevention and enforcement measures starting in 2026. These measures include road safety awareness campaigns, stricter enforcement of traffic laws, and the use of artificial intelligence to automatically detect offenses. The ongoing investigation aims to determine the exact circumstances of the accident and identify the driver who fled the scene.
