The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) issued a statement on May 27 to clarify the reasons for the delay in the national team, the Lions of Teranga, departing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
According to the FSF, the delay was due to "administrative and logistical constraints." Specifically, the federation cited delays in issuing operating licenses for the special flight to the United States and finalizing visas for some members of the coaching staff. The FSF detailed that the flight had been initially scheduled for 3:30 PM, then postponed to 7:00 PM, before finally being set for 11:00 PM.
In response to rumors, the FSF has categorically denied reports that the national coach refused to board due to disagreements related to the renegotiation of his contract. The federation acknowledged that contractual discussions were ongoing but insisted that they had no impact on the team's travel schedule.
The FSF also emphasized the unity and determination of the players, technical staff, and the federal body despite these setbacks. It thanked the State of Senegal and the fans for their patience and constant support, reaffirming its commitment to communicating transparently and reliably to combat misinformation.
Senegal will participate in its fourth World Cup, having reached the quarter-finals in 2002. The team is in Group I with France, Norway, and Iraq. Senegal's first match is scheduled against France on June 16 at the New York New Jersey Stadium.
