The second edition of the Super Masters Scrabble tournament, held in Bona'Anja Siga Bonjo near Yabassi, saw Cameroon take home the majority of the trophies. The competition, which took place from March 11 to 15, 2026, was organized by the Cameroonian Scrabble Federation (Fécascrab) and welcomed players from several African countries, including Congo, Ivory Coast, Gabon, CAR, DRC, and Chad.
Cameroon won two of the three main events. Ivan Seundjeu triumphed in the Défi on Saturday, adding this victory to that of King Josaphat Nkouete Chewa in Duplicate on Friday, March 13. These successes allowed Cameroon to rise to the top of the overall standings.
Ivory Coast also shone, with Abib Alabi's victory in the Classic event. Alabi highlighted Ivory Coast's strength in classic Scrabble, mentioning that two Ivorians competed in the final despite the diversity of nationalities present. Mathieu Gueu Zingbe, on the other hand, lost his duplicate final.
The technical director of Cameroon, Ghislain Yamga, praised the high level of the competitors, estimating that the Super Masters is positioned as the second African competition in terms of the quality of the participants. He noted that out of the 60 participants, nearly 30 were series 1, highlighting the presence of the "African elite" of Scrabble.
The president of the Cameroonian Scrabble Federation, Amédée Assomo, added that Africa has excellent players, recalling that the continent has produced several world champions. He himself was a vice-world champion and mentioned the existence of a Cameroonian world champion, as well as numerous Ivorian, Senegalese, and Beninese talents.
In parallel with the Super Masters, the national school Scrabble championship took place in the junior and cadet categories, with the participation of 160 students from 10 schools in Douala, Yaoundé, and Monatélé. Albert Christian Ngougni Njueya won the title in the junior category and will represent Cameroon at the first school Olympics scheduled for Aix-Les-Bains, France, in October. Yves Régis Bahanag was crowned champion in the cadet category. The high school of the Cité des palmiers in Douala was named the best school.
Next year, the Super Masters Scrabble is expected to evolve into an International Grand Slam competition, bringing together the 50 best players in the world. According to the president of the International Federation of Francophone Sport, Amédée Assomo, this event will further raise the level of competition. The Cameroonian Scrabble Federation, created in 1990, has the mission of organizing and promoting Scrabble throughout the country.
