The 2026 Scrabble Super Masters, held in Bona'Anja Siga Bonjo near Yabassi, saw Cameroon take home the majority of the trophies. The host country shone by winning two of the three events on the program.
After a difficult start marked by a setback on March 12 in the Classic event, smiles returned to the faces of the Cameroonian delegation. Ivan Seundjeu won the Saturday Challenge, adding to King Josaphat Nkouete Chewa's victory in Duplicate on Friday, March 13. This performance allowed Cameroon to climb the rankings and move into the lead.
The competition was intense, with strong rivalry from the Ivorians, who proved ambitious and well-prepared. Abib Alabi won the Classic, while Mathieu Gueu Zingbe narrowly lost his Duplicate final. "Ivory Coast has the solution to classic Scrabble," Alabi said, highlighting the presence of two Ivorians in the final.
Cameroon's technical director, Ghislain Yamga, praised the high level of the competitors, stressing that the Super Masters is positioned as the second African competition in terms of the quality of the participants. He noted that out of the 60 participants, nearly 30 were series 1, which represents the African elite of Scrabble. Amédée Assomo, president of the Cameroonian Scrabble Federation (FECASCRAB) and also president of the International Francophone Scrabble Federation (FISF), added that Africa has excellent players and has produced several world champions. He recalled that he is himself a vice-world champion and that there are Cameroonian, Ivorian, Senegalese and Beninese world champions.
Alongside the Super Masters, the national school Scrabble championship took place for the second time, with the participation of 160 students from Douala, Yaoundé and Monatélé. Albert Christian Ngougni Njueya won the title in the junior category and will represent Cameroon at the first school Olympics in Aix-Les-Bains, France, in October. Yves Régis Bahanag was crowned champion in the cadet category, and the high school of the Cité des Palmiers in Douala was named best school.
Next year, the Scrabble Super Masters is expected to evolve into an International Grand Slam competition, bringing together the 50 best players in the world. According to Amédée Assomo, this will be an event of an even higher level. FECASCRAB, created in 1990, continues to promote Scrabble throughout Cameroon, offering competitions, training and exchanges for enthusiasts.
